This project was made it to create a video (retro)projection for W. A. Mozart – Magic Flute Opera / Papageno I Act scene. Opéra du Rhône production (Switzerland) on a 12 meters screen wide, final projection resolution was 2560×720, 2 Full HD video projection side by side.

NB: Music is a midi file from IMSLP (http://imslp.org/) a virtual library of public domain music scores and converted to audio with Merlin (http://www.soundfonts.gonet.biz/) GM SoundFonts.
The customer for this work is the “Compagnie 3.14 / Valeria Apicella” for which I created the video for their latest show: Travelling . Once again the magnificent lights of Jean Pascal Pracht are at the limit of impossible to film under optimal conditions, but with some technical device on this occasion it was possible to return the tactile sensation that this spectacle live.

Record this show was a nice adventure: challenging both technical and artistic point of view.
Willing to give the sensation of the intimacy of the dance in the feminine universe in PSALM a secret song show Technical was not easy at all. The beautiful Pascal (very) low light in performance situation bring me to decide to record all the show with a DSRL camera and a manual lens (and manual focus ouch). I chose a oldish 50mm f/1.4 lens and shoot at 2500 iso (using magic lantern) with a Canon EOS 550D and Technicolor cinestyle profile, recording at 1080p 24fps. This was very risky but the result was amazing.
My desire was to be able to relay the feeling of intimacy of the female world presented by director / choreographer Valeria Apicella in his show Psalm a secret song.
To achieve this result and also because of the very low intensity of beautiful lights created by lighting designer Jean-Pascal Pracht I made the decision to turn the entirety of the show with a DSLR camera and an old manual lens (fire Manale of course), a 50mm f/1.4 lens, for some scenes I had spinegre up to 2500 iSO (with Magic Lantern) Canon EOS 550D (the use of the 5D would reduce the depth of field and still created more problems than benefits) and using the color profile Technicolor cinestyle to make the most of the dynamic range that it offers. All at 1080p 24fps.
A risky bet, but the result was amazing:
Manual focus, depth of field very low, FULL HD resolution, interpreters in motion, performing arts a big challenge. Under these conditions, the focus was only possible thanks to the use of a focus and focus aid follows the Magic Lantern.

Filmare questo spettacolo è stata una bella avventura, una sfida artistica e anche tecnica.
Il mio desiderio è stato di poter ritrasmettere la sensazione di intimità del mondo femminile presentato dalla regista/coreografa Valeria Apicella nel suo spettacolo Psalm a secret song.
Per ottenere questo risulato ed anche in ragione della bassissima intensità delle bellissime luci create dal light designer Jean-Pascal Pracht ho preso la decisione di girare l’integralità dello spettacolo con una camera DSLR e un vecchia ottica manuale (fuoco manale naturalmente), un 50mm f/1.4 lens, per alcune scene ho dovuto spinegre fino a 2500 iso (grazie a Magic Lantern) la Canon EOS 550D (l’utilizzo della 5D avrebbe ridotto ancora la profondità di campo e creato piu problemi che vantaggi) e utilizzando il profilo colore Technicolor cinestyle per approfittare al massimo della gamma dinamica che quest’ultimo offre. Il tutto a 1080p 24fps.
Un scomessa rischiosa, ma il risultato è stato incredibile.
Fuoco manuale, profondità di campo ridottissima, risoluzione FULL HD, interpreti in movimento, spettacolo dal vivo: una bella sfida. In queste condizioni la messa a fuoco è stata possibile solo grazie all’utilizzo di un follows focus e del focus aid di Magic Lantern.

Le tournage de ce spectacle a été une grande aventure, mais aussi un défi technique et artistique.
Mon désir était d’être en mesure de relayer le sentiment d’intimité du monde féminin présenté par la metteur en scene/ chorégraphe Valeria Apicella dans son spectacle Psalm a secret song.
Pour atteindre ce risultat et aussi en raison de la très faible intensité dse belles lumières créé par le concepteur d’éclairages Jean-Pascal Pracht j’ai pris la décision de tourner la totalité du spectacle avec un appareil DSLR et une vielle optique manuelle (mise au point manuelle bien sûr), un 50mm f/1.4, pour certaines scènes que j’ai du pousser jusqu’à 2500 ISO (avec Magic Lantern) la Canon EOS 550D (l’utilisation du 5D aurais reduire ulteriorement la profondeur de champ et aurais ammene plus de problèmes que d’avantages) et en utilisant le profil de couleur Technicolor cinestyle et pouvoir tirer le meilleur parti de la dynamique qu’il offre. Le tout à 1080p en 24fps.
un Paris risquee mais le resutat a etait encroiable.
La mise au point manuelle, la profondeur de champ très faible, la résolution Full HD, interprètes en mouvement, spectacle: un grand défi. Dans de telles conditions la mise au point a été possible que grâce à l’utilisation d’un Follow focus et a l’aide de mise au point de Magic Lantern.

Pièce pour un mur Mémoire de murs. En extérieur, de nuit, les images vidéo grand format ouvrent une brèche, une “tranche” sur un bâtiment, un monument, donnant vie aux matières de mur, créant les images dilatées d’une mémoire. Les danseurs s’y confondent et viennent inscrire la précarité du vivant.
All the show is lighten with the video projection, for an easy set up for this outdoor performance.
